When children join a new class, they may be nervous and unsure about what to expect. Families want to know if they will be welcome and if the teachers will value their suggestions and appreciate their child. Use these tips to help ease transitions year-round and to get a new year off to a great start.

You don’t always get what you wish for; you get what you work for.

What would happen if everyone in the class were exactly the same? In what way does it make our class community better to be different from each other in some ways? (Note: Distribute the “Two Families” handout.) Read the handout silently. Then answer the questions at the end of the handout.

What kind of learner are you? How do the children in your group prefer to learn? How do you incorporate different learning styles into your teaching? Simply put learning styles describe an individual’s preferred way of acquiring and processing information.

The difference between ordinary and extraordinary is that little “extra.”

The idea is that each person differs in the way they prefer to learn and everyone can enjoy learning if the material is presented in a way that compliments their learning style.

Overcoming Obstacles

Everyone experiences difficulties with studying at one time or another, and overcoming these challenges is all part of the learning process, particularly when you have a large workload.

Such issues range from temporary glitches to chronic lack of motivation and low productivity. It can take what feels like extraordinary will-power to overcome these issues, but the important thing to remember is that they can be conquered with the right attitude.

Online Course Success Tips

A group of Duquesne faculty participating in a CTE online book study developed these tips to give to students to help them succeed in online learning. Faculty teaching online might want to include a list like this on their blackboard site or in their syllabus.

Success is no accident. It is hard work, perseverance, learning, studying, sacrifice and most of all, love of what you are doing or learning to do.

If a student is new to the on-line format, take only one course the first semester. Read and understand the course Syllabus – know the student assessment measures for each on-line course to determine whether to take one or more on-line courses in a given semester. Engage the support of family members to help you succeed. Let them know what you’re dealing with before the semester begins. Most likely they really don’t know how hard you are working. They will be there when you need them most.

While each of you may have a different approach, there are smart ways to study that are useful for everyone. Plan study sessions of about one hour either in school study times or after school. Ask one another difficult questions and review multiple choice questions.

Some people dream of accomplishing great things. Others stay awake and make it happen.

Each subject has a detailed syllabus which is the best guide for both study and exams. Use it to make detailed notes on every dot point in the content section. Textbooks do not always present the information in the same way as the syllabus. So use textbooks and other references to prepare your detailed notes.
